Bulldogs beat Royals to return to winner's list in style

Monday, May 4, 2015 - 6:25 PM - by Chris Pike

SOUTH Fremantle returned to the winner's list on Saturday with an impressive 13-point victory over East Perth largely on the back of a five-goal to nil third quarter.

The Bulldogs had their chances to open up a handy lead during the first half as well, but only managed to head into half-time with 4.11 on the board, but on the back of five goals to nil in the third quarter they ended up beating the Royals 11.16 (82) to 10.9 (69) at Medibank Stadium.

South Fremantle came into the game having lost its last three matches on the back of winning the opening three games of the year, and also had just a five-day break following Monday's Anzac Derby loss to East Fremantle.

Player Column – Dylan Ross Round 7

Saturday, May 2, 2015 - 9:10 AM - by Dylan Ross

OBVIOUSLY getting dropped is never the easiest thing to take, but I have just focused on going back trying to play the best I can and offering some leadership, and following the lead from guys like Red and Gumby to try and get back in the ones as quickly as I can.

Obviously with the longer week we trained Saturday morning before playing on Monday, and Toddy just came up to me and had a chat, and said that there's a few things I need to address moving forward and he thought it was in with the best interests of the team that I had a run in the twos. No one's bigger than the footy clubs and if that's his decision that's his decision, unfortunately both teams didn’t go too well on the weekend against East Fremantle.

I had wrist surgery over summer so that inhibited my pre-season a little bit so my touch was a little bit off and confidence was a little bit down. That was the main reason the main reason I was given, it wasn’t so much that one game against Subi but the form over the whole season. Obviously I would like to be in the ones but that's how it rolls.

Five Bulldogs named in WAFL State squad

SOUTH Fremantle players Ryan Cook, Marlon Pickett, Ashton Hams, Ben Saunders and Blayne Wilson have all been named in the WAFL State squad to play South Australia at Lathlain Park on Saturday May 23.

The initial squad of 36 players has been announced and that includes the five South Fremantle players who have all made strong starts to the 2015 WAFL season.

Cook, Hams and Saunders were all part of the WAFL team that beat the NEAFL in Sydney last year and all were among the best players with Hams coming away with the Simpson Medal, but Cook not being far behind and Saunders booting five goals.

Youngsters can't quite get Bulldogs over Sharks in Anzac Derby

Tuesday, April 28, 2015 - 12:26 PM - by Chris Pike

SOUTH Fremantle significantly lifted its intensity, got big performances from two young inclusions and had Ben Saunders take an incredible mark, but again a costly 16 minutes in the second quarter was costly with East Fremantle winning the Anzac Derby by 17 points at Fremantle Oval.

A terrific crowd of 5200 turned out at Fremantle Oval for the seventh straight Anzac Day weekend clash between the Bulldogs and Sharks, and despite the better signs from South Fremantle following losses to Swan Districts and Subiaco, it was East Fremantle who prevailed 13.15 (93) to 11.10 (76).

South Fremantle kicked four goals to one in the first quarter and continued to press hard in the final quarter, but conceding seven goals straight in 16 minutes in the second quarter to East Fremantle proved too hard to make up for.

There were good signs, though, particularly with the work of Brock Higgins in the ruck, Adam Guglielmana in the back-line, Josh Pullman up forward and then the exciting debut of Jacob Dragovich and terrific tagging job of Simon Panizza on Liam Anthony.

Anzac Derby Preview v East Fremantle

Sunday, April 26, 2015 - 2:06 AM - by Chris Pike

SOUTH Fremantle coach Todd Curley has swung the axe in the search of a vastly improved performance and win in the Anzac Derby against East Fremantle on Monday at Fremantle Oval.

South Fremantle started the season impressively under new coach Curley with strong wins over West Perth, Perth and Claremont but the Bulldogs have since lost to Swan Districts by 21 points and then reigning premiers Subiaco by 89.

It was the loss last Saturday to the Lions that left Curley with no choice but to make some changes to the side to try to get the league team back on the winner's list, and to also capitalise on the unbeaten form that the reserves have shown so far in 2015.

Player Column – Ryan Cook Anzac Day

Friday, April 24, 2015 - 9:25 AM - by Ryan Cook

IT IS always a privilege and honour to represent this football club on such a prestigious occasion in Anzac Day like we will in Monday's derby at Fremantle Oval.

We get a bumper crowd who come along to watch two arch enemies in South and East do battle as the two proud clubs have for many years and I’m sure this Monday will be no exception.

Obviously a game of football cannot compare to anything these mostly young men and women went through all those years ago, all we can do is go out this Monday afternoon and play hard aggressive football and represent our football club and fans as best we can and hopefully do them proud.
