Round 17 Preview v East Fremantle

Saturday, July 18, 2015 - 1:06 PM - by Chris Pike

SOUTH Fremantle is looking for a sixth straight win at East Fremantle's ATOM Stadium on Sunday and more importantly the Bulldogs need the win to be a chance to return to the WAFL's top five after Round 17.

With East Fremantle desperate to avoid an eighth straight defeat and South Fremantle needing to win to be a chance of returning to the WAFL's top five, all signs point to a fascinating final Fremantle derby of 2015 at ATOM Stadium on Sunday.

The two teams will also be playing for the Uittenbroek-Ciccotosto Cup for 2015 named in honour of two of the respective clubs finest servants, East Fremantle's Bob Uittenbroek and South Fremantle's Brian Ciccotosto.

There is plenty at stake in the contest as well and for the Sharks, finals might now be nothing but a faint hope, however, they will be wanting to avoid losing their eighth match in succession and to get the first win under caretaker coach Brad Dodd since he replaced Steve Malaxos.

Maskos and Bulldogs aim to continue visiting teams winning derbies

Thursday, July 16, 2015 - 6:56 PM - by Chris Pike

SOUTH Fremantle defender Jason Maskos had to patiently wait for a league opportunity this year but he's done well the last three weeks and now is looking forward to helping the Bulldogs make a run at a first finals appearance since 2011.

Maskos didn’t find his way into the South Fremantle league side until Round 13 this season but he's now played the last three games and has improved on each occasion as part of a back-line unit that has been holding up well.

South Fremantle might be struggling to kick goals in the absence of Ben Saunders, and with Josh Pullman, Paul Mugambwa, Cory Dell'Olio and Jacob Dragovich spending time out injured and in the reserves in recent times, but the back-line has been doing well to keep the Bulldogs in games.

Slow start against Tigers costly for Bulldogs despite dominance thereafter

Monday, July 13, 2015 - 12:33 PM - by Chris Pike

DESPITE dominating the last three quarters of the game, South Fremantle fell four points short of the fast-starting Claremont in the traditional NAIDOC Round clash at the Claremont Showground on Saturday.

Claremont was on fire in the first quarter kicking seven goals to two and even though South Fremantle controlled the contest from that point forward with six goals to two over the last three quarters, the Tigers held on to win 9.10 (64) to 8.12 (60).

The loss sees South Fremantle slip outside of the WAFL's top five with a 7-7 record and games to finish the season now at home to East Perth, Peel and West Perth, and away to East Fremantle, Subiaco and the Thunder as the Bulldogs try to play finals football for the first time since 2011.

THiS week's edition of Whitey's Whispers pays tribute to the Indigenous talent at the South Fremantle Football Club ahead of this Saturday's clash to celebrate NAIDOC Week against Claremont at the Showground.

South Fremantle has a remarkable history of having some of the best Indigenous players ever run around in the mighty Red V jumper including Stephen Michael, Maurice Rioli, Peter, Phil and Wally Matera, Nicky Winmar, Benny VIgona, Basil Campbell, Jeff Farmer, Toby McGrath and Roger Hayden.

That tradition is continuing at the South Fremantle Football Club as well with Tim Kelly, Jacob Martinez, Kaiden Matera, Marlion Pickett, Bailey Matera, Traye Bennell and Dominic Warrell currently Indigenous players playing with the Bulldogs.

NAIDOC Round Preview v Claremont

Friday, July 10, 2015 - 9:57 PM - by Chris Pike

SOUTH Fremantle returns from a bye to take on the in-form Claremont at the Showground in the traditional NAIDOC Round clash and the Bulldogs have the chance to further consolidate their position in the top five and back up the win over Swan Districts.

Claremont and South Fremantle first played one another during NAIDOC Week back in 2007 and now the entire competition has jumped on board to honour the Aboriginal players past and present, but it's a concept created by the Tigers and Bulldogs and it's now become an annual WAFL fixture.

As well as the chance to celebrate the contribution of the Indigenous players at both clubs, the game is a crucial one for both teams as they fight over a finals position.

Pickett's outstanding form could lead to AFL future

Thursday, July 9, 2015 - 2:29 PM - by Chris Pike

WITH South Fremantle's traditional NAIDOC Week clash with Claremont taking place this Saturday, one of the Bulldogs Indigenous stars Marlion Pickett has all the tools required to end up in the AFL as early as 2016 according to coach Todd Curley.

Curley is well-equipped to judge as well having played 115 AFL matches with the Western Bulldogs either side of his decorated two-time premiership winning playing WAFL playing career with the West Perth.

Curley's most recent football involvement before taking over as South Fremantle coach in 2015 was an assistant coach to Mark Harvey at Fremantle as well in the AFL so he knows what it takes for a player to make it on the big stage, and he has no doubt Pickett has all the tools to do just that.
