Slow start again proves costly for Bulldogs

Friday, July 22, 2016 - 5:40 PM - by Chris Pike

SOUTH Fremantle again made a slow start and couldn’t come from behind to win falling to Subiaco by 11 points in Thursday night WAFL action at Medibank Stadium.

After conceding the opening six goals against Claremont two weeks ago prior to the bye, South Fremantle again gave up the first five on Thursday night in 16 minutes against Subiaco and it proved a mountain to high to hold on to the lead once the Bulldogs worked so hard to claim it.

Wet, cold and windy conditions greeted Thursday night WAFL football as the top two teams put in a hard fought contest at Medibank Stadium to open Round 18 that saw Subiaco prevail over South Fremantle by 11 points to move two games clear in first place.

Subiaco started on fire with five goals in the opening 16 minutes of the game and while South Fremantle fought back to lead briefly during both the second and third quarters, the Lions responded to dominate the final quarter to end up winning 10.9 (69) to 9.4 (58).

Player Column – Ryan Cook Round 18

Wednesday, July 20, 2016 - 11:36 AM - by Ryan Cook

I WAS blown away when Paul Hasleby first told me I would be captain of the South Fremantle Football Club back in 2012 given I had only been here for one year especially when we still had a lot of good leaders like Craig White, Toby McGrath and Paul Mugambwa.

I hadn’t put much thought into who it would be after Jaymie Graham left and it took me aback a little bit when I found out, but I accepted it and took it on. I was proud of the honour then just as I still am now.

Cook focused on team success ahead of breaking captaincy record

Tuesday, July 19, 2016 - 12:57 PM - by Chris Pike

SOUTH FREMANTLE'S Ryan Cook will become the Bulldogs' longest ever serving captain this Thursday night against Subiaco but what he wants more than anything is to get some form back to build towards his team's first finals appearance since 2011.

Cook will captain South Fremantle for an 86th time this Thursday night against Subiaco at Medibank Stadium that will see him surpass the current captaincy record at the Bulldogs he shares with 1997 premiership co-captain Peter Worsfold.

Considering South Fremantle has been captained by the likes of Clive Lewington, Steve Marsh, Frank Treasure, John Todd, Hassa Mann, Brian Ciccotosto, Noel Carter, Brad Collard, Marty Atkins, David Gault and Toby McGrath, it's quite an achievement for Cook to not have been captain for the most number of games.

Coach Post Match – Todd Curley NAIDOC Round

Wednesday, July 13, 2016 - 5:12 PM - by Chris Pike

WHAT South Fremantle coach Todd Curley had to say following the NAIDOC Round loss to Claremont at Fremantle Community Bank Oval ahead of a bye this week and then a Thursday night clash with the league-leading Subiaco at Medibank Stadium.

QUESTION: Those conditions always create a bit of the unknown and it's usually the team that competes harder for longer, and that takes their chances that wins. And that's what Claremont did?
ANSWER: The disappointing thing is that we were outworked and they were certainly harder than us in the first quarter. To give up six goals in those conditions make it a long way back.

Bulldogs lose again in annual NAIDOC Round clash with Tigers

Monday, July 11, 2016 - 8:05 PM - by Chris Pike

SOUTH Fremantle wasn’t able to adjust to Saturday's horrendous conditions as well as Claremont illustrated by a goalless first half with the Tigers going on to score a 31-point win at Fremantle Community Bank Oval.

The weather was at its worst in the first half and Claremont adjusted the better with the only six goals of the first quarter, and the only major of the second.

South Fremantle did rally with four goals during the third quarter but two goals in the final minute for Claremont put the result beyond doubt with the Tigers going on to win 11.3 (69) to 5.8 (38).

South Fremantle continues to lead way in Indigenous development

Wednesday, July 6, 2016 - 8:53 PM - by Chris Pike

SOUTH Fremantle could very well have the richest Indigenous heritage of any football club in the country and this Saturday the Bulldogs host Claremont in what has now become the traditional NAIDOC Week match at Fremantle Community Bank Oval.

South Fremantle's heritage of Indigenous players includes the club having named its own Indigenous Team of the Century in 2009, having four Bulldogs players named in the AFL's Indigenous Team of the Century and had around 100 players of Aboriginal backgrounds representing the club.

South Fremantle and Claremont have set the standard in the WAFL with NAIDOC celebrations largely because of the Indigenous players historically who have come through their ranks, including Stephen Michael, Wally, Phil and Peter Matera, Jeff Farmer, Maurice Rioli, Nicky Winmar (South Fremantle), and Jim and Phil Krakouer, Irwin Lewis and son Chris (Claremont).
