Another big Youth Girls win for Bulldogs

Tuesday, March 2, 2021 - 10:20 AM by Chris Pike

SOUTH Fremantle's Youth Girls delivered another brilliant performance as their Rogers Cup premiership defence warmed up while the senior women had a tougher time of things against Swan Districts.

South Fremantle was back at home for the second straight home game to open the Optus WAFLW Premiership Season but things didn’t quite go as planned for the league side.

They were coming off an impressive Round 1 showing against Subiaco where the Bulldogs produced their best ever quarter in the last term in their history of participating in the WAFLW competition.

That saw South Fremantle fall just three points short of what would have been a history victory against Subiaco so they deserves to enter Sunday morning's clash with Swan Districts with a degree of confidence.

Swan Districts was coming off a Round 1 victory but it was a low-scoring affair where they beat Claremont two goals to one at Bassendean's Steel Blue Oval.

So that set the stage for a fascinating match up on Sunday morning at Fremantle Community Bank Oval with the game streamed live courtesy of The West Australian.

Swan Districts would prove too strong on this occasion, though, ending up defeating South Fremantle 8.11 (59) to 1.0 (6).

It was a tough opening to the game for South Fremantle as they went scoreless in the opening half with Swan Districts kicking two goals in the first quarter, and another in the second.

South Fremantle got on the board with a goal to Lauren Vecchio in the third quarter but Swans managed to pull away further with another two goals.

Swan Districts then added three more goals in the final term to run out 53-point victors.

Pia Durk, Ella Higgins, Makayla Cocking, Ashleigh Reidy and Casey Byrne were all among the best performers during the game for South Fremantle.

Meanwhile in Round 2 of the Rogers Cup 2021 season, South Fremantle's Youth Girls took on East Perth also on Sunday morning at Leederville Oval.

The Bulldogs came away with a tremendous 16.14 (110) to 1.0 (6) victory against the Royals on the back of a similarly impressive Round 1 win against Subiaco and winning the Rogers Cup premiership in 2020.

It was a dominant start to the game from South Fremantle with five goals to nil against East Perth in the first quarter as they took a 33-point advantage over the Royals.

East Perth did kick a goal in the second term but South Fremantle added a further three goals to head into the half-time interval with the 50-point edge.

It was more of the same in the second half from the Bulldogs with South Fremantle kicking another two goals in the third quarter, and six in the last to end up winning by 104 points.

Rosie Anderson kicked six goals in a brilliant display from South Fremantle while ReAnne O'Neil kicked two herself.

Along with Rosie Anderson, Chloe Boothman, Noa McNaughton, Holly Denholm and Mia Whitelaw were all tremendous for South Fremantle.

South Fremantle's league team is back in action in Round 3 of the 2021 Optus WAFLW Premiership Season this Sunday against Claremont at Claremont's Revo Fitness Stadium from 1pm.

The reserves will play prior to that from 11.05am and the Youth Girls battle begins the day from 9.20am.
