Bulldogs help deliver historic win in Melbourne for WA

Monday, May 29, 2017 - 12:08 PM - by Chris Pike

THE WAFL State Team made history in Melbourne on Saturday beating the VFL by 63 points with Ben Saunders, Tim Kelly, Haiden Schloithe and Ryan Cook all outstanding from South Fremantle.

It is a first ever victory for any WA team in Melbourne and the four Bulldogs players were all among the best players in the contest.

South Fremantle's goal machine Ben Saunders took home the Simpson Medal after kicking six goals from 16 possessions and eight marks. As if six goals weren’t enough, he could have easily reached double-figures had he converted some of his seven behinds.

Curley hopes Bulldogs four help WAFL make history

Friday, May 26, 2017 - 11:32 PM - by Chris Pike

SOUTH Fremantle coach Todd Curley was there last time the WAFL played the VFL in Melbourne and now he would take great pride if four Bulldogs stars help Western Australia create history against Victoria on Saturday.

Curley himself enjoyed his chances to represent WA during his distinguished playing career and he was also an assistant coach to Ashley Prescott when the WAFL last played the VFL in Melbourne back in 2007.

While that wasn’t a day to remember with Victoria beating WA by 119 points, it was also the 24th straight time that the Big V has beaten the Black Swans on home turf in Melbourne.

Player Column – Josh Pullman State Game

Friday, May 26, 2017 - 11:21 AM - by Josh Pullman

THE one-point loss on the weekend to East Perth was a tough pill to swallow. Compounding the frustration of ‘so close, yet so far’ is the fact that we now wait for two weeks for an opportunity to get back on the winners list.

Our video review revealed some good stuff, and some stuff to work on over the state bye. We’ll train this week without Ryan Cook, Tim Kelly, Ben Saunders and Haiden Schloithe as they go off to represent WA against Victoria.

We’re super proud of all the boys that made the initial squad, as well as the four that got in.

Bulldogs can't quite hold on against Royals

Monday, May 22, 2017 - 2:22 PM - by Chris Pike

SOUTH Fremantle couldn’t quite hold on to a seemingly match-winning lead against East Perth at Fremantle Community Bank Oval on Saturday.

South Fremantle looked on track for its seventh win of the season and to bounce back from a loss to Subiaco a week earlier having kicked the only three goals of the third quarter and then leading by 22 points when Cory Dell'Olio booted his third to start the last term.

But East Perth showed terrific fighting spirit and ended up kicking the last four goals of the game, and then scored the winning point when a Drew Petrie shot was rushed through.

That was enough for the Royals to come away with a 10.11 (71) to 10.10 (70) victory.

Round 10 Preview v East Perth

Friday, May 19, 2017 - 11:14 PM - by Chris Pike

SOUTH Fremantle returns to Fremantle Community Bank Oval on Saturday to take on East Perth with the Bulldogs out to bounce back from last week's loss to Subiaco heading into the state game break.

South Fremantle might have given up top spot on the WAFL ladder with a 39-point loss to Subiaco last Saturday, but it has still been a strong start to the 2017 season for the Bulldogs.

Going into the break for next week's state game with a 7-2 record would mark an impressive first half of 2017 for the Bulldogs but the Royals will take some beating.

SOUTH Fremantle returns to Fremantle Community Bank Oval this Saturday to take on East Perth in the WAFL's Know Your Score Men's Health Round.

East Perth looms as a tough opponent, though, with the Royals having won their last three matches after losing the opening five of 2017.

The game is also the last before the WAFL State game next Saturday against the VFL at Melbourne's North Port Oval.

Lions repay Bulldogs for Round 1 39-point victory

Monday, May 15, 2017 - 10:04 AM - by Chris Pike

SOUTH Fremantle couldn’t quite keep its momentum going losing to Subiaco by 39 points at Leederville Oval on Saturday conceding top spot in the WAFL in the process.

The game loomed as the clash of the WAFL season to date with both teams entering on 6-1 records with South Fremantle sitting top with the superior percentage and on a five-game winning run with Subiaco having won its last six.

The Bulldogs did beat the Lions by 39 points back in Round 1 at Fremantle Community Bank Oval, but the Lions got a measure of revenge on Saturday winning by the exact same margin.

Round 9 Preview v Subiaco

Friday, May 12, 2017 - 3:31 PM - by Chris Pike

SOUTH Fremantle has the chance to beat Subiaco for a second time this season, to win a sixth straight WAFL match and to go a game clear on top of the ladder when taking on the Lions at Leederville Oval on Saturday.

Subiaco and South Fremantle both enter the clash at Leederville Oval in outstanding form with the Lions having won six straight matches, and the Bulldogs five in succession.

That sees both teams currently hold a 6-1 record with South Fremantle only currently sitting ahead of Subiaco in top spot courtesy of a percentage greater to the tune of 28 per cent.
