Coach Post Match – Todd Curley WA Day

Thursday, June 9, 2016 - 4:42 PM - by Chris Pike

WHAT South Fremantle coach Todd Curley had to say following the WA Day Foundation Derby loss to East Fremantle ahead of this Saturday's WAFL state game against Tasmania and then a clash the following Sunday against Peel Thunder.

QUESTION: The day started well with the first couple of goals but after that it turned into a pretty tough game?
ANSWER: We weren’t very good and they were very good. We will take nothing away from East Fremantle, they were much cleaner with the ball, obviously much more efficient kicking at goal and probably when the conditions deteriorated for a while they were probably tougher than us.

Q: It's easy to point at the shots on goal you missed but they probably didn’t really allow you to play the way you have been for most of the season?
A: We did have six or seven shots running in without pressure that we missed. That is deflating for the team and we kicked 12 straight points in the second and third quarters. We certainly didn’t play well and didn’t deserve to win the game, but you have to convert to keep yourself in the game when things aren’t going your way.

Wasteful Bulldogs made to pay in WA Day Foundation Derby

Wednesday, June 8, 2016 - 12:11 AM - by Chris Pike

A GOALLESS drought lasting two and-a-half quarters despite plenty of gettable opportunities left South Fremantle no chance of winning the WA Day Foundation Derby against East Fremantle, but the Bulldogs remain on top of the WAFL ladder heading into the state game break.

South Fremantle started the WA Day Foundation Derby at Fremantle Community Bank Oval with the opening two goals of the game through Blaine Johnson and Steven Verrier, but things didn’t quite go to plan after that in the difficult conditions.

The Bulldogs still led by a goal at the five-minute mark of the second quarter after Mason Shaw kicked his second goal, but they wouldn’t kick another goal until the 21-minute mark of the fourth term.

East Fremantle kicked 10 goals in that period on the way to the 13.12 (90) to 6.15 (51) victory.

WA Day Foundation Derby Preview v East Fremantle

Monday, June 6, 2016 - 2:26 AM - by Chris Pike

SOUTH Fremantle can further extend its lead atop the WAFL with a WA Day Foundation Derby win over East Fremantle at Fremantle Community Bank Oval on Monday but to do so the Bulldogs will need to become the first home team to win a derby in 13 attempts.

It is first against third and just six weeks after a classic in the Anzac Day clash, South Fremantle and East Fremantle do battle in the Foundation Derby for 2016 on WA Day at Fremantle Community Bank Oval in what promises to be an exciting and pivotal contest.

Both clubs might have finished the 2015 season in horror fashion with the Bulldogs losing their last five games and the Sharks 12 of their last 13, but the opening half of 2016 has been dramatically better for both leading to what should be an exciting Foundation Derby in the most traditional WAFL fixture.

Guglielmana desperate for finals but focus on Foundation Derby

Monday, June 6, 2016 - 1:31 AM - by Chris Pike

SOUTH Fremantle's Adam Guglielmana will play his 118th WAFL match in the WA Day Foundation Derby against East Fremantle but what he desperately craves is the first final of his career that a win could bring one step closer to reality.

Guglielmana made his league debut with the Bulldogs in 2008 and had to do a long apprenticeship to earn his stripes in a side that was a regular finals participant and the premiers in 2009.

By 2011, he had become a regular member of the line-up as a hard-running wingman and midfielder, but he wasn’t part of the finals campaign of that year after undergoing a knee reconstruction.

No complacency at Bulldogs despite hot start to season

Monday, June 6, 2016 - 1:15 AM - by Chris Pike

SOUTH Fremantle coach Todd Curley has understandably been impressed with the Bulldogs start to the 2016 WAFL season to sit on top of the ladder, but he knows that counts for little in Monday's Foundation Derby at Fremantle Community Bank Oval.

South Fremantle has put together an outstanding start to the season winning eight of its opening nine matches prior to the bye last weekend and now ahead of the traditional WA Day Foundation Derby against East Fremantle.

It has been the consistent performances right across the board that has been the great highlight of South Fremantle's season both in terms of the team performance overall, but also the evenness of strong contributors all over the field.

Bulldogs coach throws support behind players for state game

Friday, June 3, 2016 - 5:50 PM - by Chris Pike

SOUTH Fremantle coach Todd Curley will encourage his players who have a chance to represent Western Australia in next Saturday's state game against Tasmania to grasp the opportunity despite the short break following the Foundation Derby.

South Fremantle takes on East Fremantle in the traditional Foundation Derby on WA Day this Monday at Fremantle Community Bank Oval meaning there is just five days from that until this year's state game on Saturday against Tasmania at Steel Blue Oval.

That short break has also led to some clubs ruling some star players out particularly from teams who have not had a bye for some time, and don't have one for several weeks after the state match.
