WA football legends Maurice Rioli and Ray Sorrell have been recognised with induction into the Australian Football Hall of Fame.

The pair were inducted last night during a gala event in Melbourne.

1959 Brownlow medallist Verdun Howell (St Kilda), SANFL star Paul Bagshaw (Sturt) Adelaide defender Ben Hart and Brisbane Lions midfielder Nigel Lappin were also inducted.

WA and AFL Hall of Fame Legend Barry Cable was added to the Australian Football Hall of Fame selection panel after playing an important role advocating for greater national recognition of the history of WA Football prior to the introduction of the AFL competition.

PERSONALLY the move from Frankston to South Fremantle has been an easy one. After my first training session back in December, I knew I had made the right decision.

The way the board, the players, the coaches, the volunteers and the supporters made me feel welcome from the start is something SFFC should be proud of. It's also great to be part of a club with such a rich history like South Fremantle.

I am enjoying time off the field with the boys as well wither it be catching up for dinners, playing golf or sharing a beer or two with them after a win.

WHAT South Fremantle coach Todd Curley had to say following Sunday's 32-point win over Peel Thunder, what impressed him and an update on the injuries, and looking ahead to taking on West Perth this Saturday at HBF Arena.

QUESTION: Against a team that had been in good form and given you came in without some important players, and lost two during the game, that was a strong and impressive win?
ANSWER: I thought it showed a lot of character. We obviously lost a couple of really good players before the game and then to lose two of your leaders with Ash before quarter-time and then Adam McIntosh straight after half-time. The conditions were challenging as well and we had a few challenges thrown at us by a really good opposition, but they gutsed it out pretty well.

DESPITE the absence of some key players and losing two more stars during the day, South Fremantle delivered a tremendous performance to bounce back from the Foundation Derby loss to beat Peel Thunder by 32 points on Sunday at Bendigo Bank Stadium.

South Fremantle came into the clash after losing to the WA Day Foundation Derby to East Fremantle and were without half-forwards Haiden Schloithe and Blaine Johnson to foot and hamstring injuries respectively.

Then Ashton Hams injured a calf in the first quarter and Adam McIntosh broke a bone in his lower leg during the game against Peel on Sunday.

But South Fremantle fought through that and the wet conditions in the Mandurah to end up recording the strong 15.11 (101) to 10.9 (69) victory over a team that had won its last three matches.

SOUTH Fremantle needs to beat Peel Thunder at Bendigo Bank Stadium on Sunday to guarantee the Bulldogs finish Round 13 of the WAFL season on top of the ladder.

South Fremantle currently holds that top position with an 8-2 record and the best percentage in the WAFL despite a last up loss to East Fremantle in the WA Day Foundation Derby.

Peel, meanwhile, won its last three matches prior to the state game break over East Perth, East Fremantle and Subiaco to improve to a 7-4 record.

IT was tough watching the boys go down to East Fremantle in such a big game like the Foundation Derby on WA Day. I was a late withdrawal, and I think viewing from the sidelines gets harder the longer your career goes on.

Watching the game gives you the opportunity to see our brand of footy and the execution of game plan from a coach’s perspective though, which I found valuable.

We took some important things away from the game, and are looking forward to going toe to toe with the Sharks later in the year again now that we have got one win each against each other, and at least at the moment we both look capable of being there come finals time.

ASHTON Hams has played in three state games for Western Australia and won them all, and the South Fremantle star would like nothing more now than to take part in a WAFL victory over Victoria next year.

By the time Hams returned full-time to South Fremantle in 2014 following four years and 39 AFL matches with the West Coast Eagles, he already was a dual WAFL premiership player and Simpson Medallist with the Bulldogs.

But he had yet to play state football and that has changed the last three years with Hams a key part of the WAFL team that has defeated the NEAFL in Sydney, SANFL at Lathlain Park and Tasmania at Steel Blue Oval – adding another Simpson Medal along the way in 2014.

MAURICE Rioli might be more known on the national stage for his feats at Richmond, but in his 168 games for South Fremantle he cemented himself as one of the best and most excited players to ever don the Mighty Red V.

Rioli's career with South Fremantle began as a teenager in 1975 and over the next six seasons he delivered some remarkable football including a starring role in the 1980 premiership victory, and then earning a Simpson Medal in 1981 grand final as well.

He would go on to join Richmond in the then VFL playing 118 matches over the next six years playing 118 games, winning the Tigers' best and fairest in 1982 and 1983, a Norm Smith Medal in the losing grand final of 1982 and finishing second in the 1983 Brownlow Medal.

SOUTH Fremantle had five players line-up in Saturday's record-breaking state game win over Tasmania and all delivered strong showings led by 29 possessions from Ashton Hams and six goals by Ben Saunders.

Hams, Saunders, Tim Kelly, Ryan Cook and Marlion Pickett all played for WA with the WAFL side beating Tasmania by a record 134 points that eclipse the 122-point triumph at North Hobart in 1964.

It was a dominant performance from the outset by WA after Tasmania kicked the game's first goal. The WAFL then kicked the next 11 goals of the game and then after Tasmania booted three in the third term, WA kicked the final 13 majors to end up winning 25.14 (164) to 4.6 (30).

IT has been a week of ups and downs for me so far. The massive low coming off the loss to rivals East Fremantle, and then the massive high in being selected to represent the state against Tasmania.
 
The honour of playing state football for Western Australia is massive. Only last night we had legends of state football stand in front of us and recount their favourite memories. It really shows how much it means to them and how passionate people are about it. 
 
I have great memories of playing against NEAFL in my first state game, but even better memories of the people I played with and the celebrations we had after the win.
