Colts Report - Round 15

Wednesday, July 9, 2014 - 9:14 AM by Arthur Maskos

ANOTHER slow start has seen the South Fremantle's colts go down by 36 points to Claremont at the Showground on Saturday morning. The home side were able to keep the Bulldogs goalless for the second time in two weeks in the first quarter.

The lack of intensity shown at the beginning of games has hurt the colts side as they have failed to reel in the opposition for three consecutive weeks.

The pressure to perform over the coming weeks has risen as the squad must now produce some wins to retain second position on the ladder.

It has been a difficult couple of weeks but it also has given us an opportunity to blood a few new faces and get a bearing on the talent as we delve further into our list. Congratulations to Jake Hickey and Shai Bolton on their first games.

Shai is 15 years of age and a part of our prestigious Warriors Development Squad production line. His exciting debut produced some thrilling highlights and we look forward to the future to see him once again. Shai will now travel with the rest of the 16s squad to Melbourne on their annual Warriors trip.

Fortunately we have some very able replacements as we welcome the return of a few of the State representatives from the WA 18s team who had a win in their last national game which will give them some confidence when they rejoin the South Fremantle colts team. These boys along with those players performing well each week will be determined to turn around the current fortunes of the program.

I am sure players like Jye Depane, Cameron Loersch and Joel McComb will continue their good form and play an important part of our revival. Jye had his best game for the team with 25 disposals and leading from the front when the team was struggling.

Joel lifted his rating after half-time and gave great run off half back. Cameron kicked three goals to go along with his 15 touches to continue his rich form in front of the big sticks.

Others to show that they have some hold on a spot in the side were youngsters Jake Florenca and Brandon Donaldson. These young guns have carried much of the midfield load over the past weeks and will benefit the return of the more senior members of the squad.

They enjoyed their stint forward in the second half and put on some creative displays in front of goals. Unfortunately their efforts were curtailed by two late Claremont goals just before the last break. The deficit was just too great to counter and the side went down fighting and showing good signs for the coming weeks.

The squad and the support crew are determined to rectify the lapse in form. After some mediocre performances over the last month I am sure that all involved will pull out all stops when we take on the Demons this coming weekend.
