Welcome to Season 2013!

It’s with great anticipation that we bring you our first newsletter for the year. We will be bringing these out monthly and hopefully you will get plenty of information to keep you up to date.

I can’t stress how important our website is moving forward for our organisation. Please visit www.southfremantlefc.com.au as many times as you want to get updated news, stories, events, merchandise and membership information. Game previews and summaries will be up on the site every week as well as interesting stories of day to day news on the players and all levels for the club.

We are also making a big effort this year to engage in the world of social media. Our Facebook site southfreofc and our twitter site @SFFCBulldogs is working well to connect with new supporters and members. We want everyone to know who we are and how to engage with us.

Don’t forget to enter your business in this year’s Corporate Classic 20th Anniversary. Tickets are $600 (+GST) and you could win your company’s logo on the back of the 2013 League and Reserves playing guernsey, and one year free advertising on the new giant LED screen.

The draw takes place on 22nd February so get your entries in to secure your place for this extra special 20th Anniversary celebration!

Our exclusive member’s only raffle is back again for 2013. Tickets are $60 and you have a 1 in 5 chance of winning $100 every Friday night for 10 weeks, starting on 12th April.

My short time at the club has been exciting and we are well placed for a competitive year ahead. I would like to thank Haydn Raitt and the Board of Directors for their support during the smooth transition from Cicco to myself. I can’t wait to meet our members during the year and all of us at the club are now looking forward to an exciting season.

Enjoy the read!!

The 2012 Colts Premiership team celebrate their win

Back to back - Colts Premiers 2012

The SFFC Colts side again has taken all before them and made light work of the opposition in the 2012 WAFL Colts grand final.

In what was the first ever WAFL Colts Derby Grand Final the mighty Bulldogs produced a blistering start that was far too good for a Shark side unable to handle the abundant talent of the red and whites. The amount of pressure applied to the opposition was a sure sign that the Bulldogs had bought their 'A' game to Patersons Stadium.

The rugged midfield in Reece Miller, Sheldon Taylor and Brett Hill gave the forwards plenty of opportunity, which they made the most of. Mason Shaw (5 goals), Sam Rundle (5 goals) and Marvin Warrell (3 goals), were all dynamic and dangerous as they piled on nine goals during the first half to a paltry single from the Sharks outfit. Adam Carter showed great poise as he led the charge forward to set up a lead that was too far away from being caught. Dale Hamilton, Brendan Verrier and Dylan Main used their pace and skill to deliver many headaches to the blue and white team. This pace was surely a major asset to the Bulldogs on a long Subiaco Oval.

With the forwards and midfield dominating, the backline was able to squeeze the last remaining zone and deny the opposition any chance of relief. With Shaun Lynch, Simon Panizza and Jayden D'Vauz constantly rebounding any forward sorties from the Sharks and turning defence into attack through Tim Kelly, Manny Collard and Ben Sokol carrying the ball deep into the forward 50 metre arc. Robbie Thompson and Tom Vanderluer ruled the airways down back which led to the diminutive pair of Brendan Chen and Matthew Gundry sweeping up and clearing the loose ball.

It was such a polished performance that there were no passengers in the talent laden side and it was just too difficult to fault any effort throughout the entire game. Many thanks all the support staff, in particular Peter Robinson, Jason Ireland, Mark Foster and Sue Jones. Their efforts were just terrific and a great finish to the year is just reward for the all work they did. The SFFC colts program has once again proven to be the beneficiaries of an elite development system that has produced many gems that are only starting to have an impact on the football landscape.

Michael Vegar – Strength and Conditioning Manager

In 2013 we have been very lucky to secure the services of Mike Vegar.

Mike put his stamp on the senior group immediately and his high performance methods see the group looking fitter and more prepared for the season ahead. Senior Coach Paul Hasleby says Mike has built a solid base for the players, "we are well in front of where we were this time last year" said Paul.

Some of Mike’s previous high profile roles include Strength and Conditioning Coach for the Australian Institute of Sport, looking after the Men’s National Hockey Squad, Strength and Conditioning Manager for the East Perth Football Club, and work with the Western Australian Football Commission with the Under 16 State Football Team.

Mike is a likeable guy with loads of energy and will be a fantastic acquisition to our team. We wish him all the best for the season ahead. Don’t forget to introduce yourself if you see him around the club!!

South Fremantle is pleased to welcome four new recruits to the Bulldog’s league squad for 2013.

Former Port Adelaide midfielder Mitch Banner joins returning South Fremantle and Carlton rookie midfielder Mitchell Carter, East Fremantle defender Justin Monaco and former Claremont tall forward Alistair Gillespie.

Originally recruited to Port Adelaide from the Western Jets with the 42nd selection in the 2008 AFL Draft, Banner played 10 AFL games after he had represented Victoria Metro at the 2008 AFL National Under 18 Championships.

Mitchell Carter rejoins Souths after being selected in the 2010 AFL Rookie Draft to Carlton. Carter played eight league games for Souths before being selected by Carlton.

Also joining the South's squad are tall defender Justin Monaco, who has transferred from East Fremantle after playing 12 League and 26 Reserve games with the Sharks, and tall forward/ruckman Alistair Gillespie from Claremont. Gillespie played six league and 35 reserve games for the Tigers, kicking six goals in the 2012 Reserves grand final.
